Either You Like Me or You Don’t… Either Way It’s OK

Sometimes we meet someone and we really, really want them to like us. Maybe it’s a job interview and you want the job so you really want the person interviewing you to like you, an attractive person that you can see yourself dating, or a family member that you want to get along better with. We feel a lot of pressure to be liked by these people and we give them power over our lives.

Sometimes we’re so busy thinking about whether the other person likes us, we forget to ask ourselves if we really like the person. Relationships are a two-way street. It’s important that you like the person before you even worry about if they like you.

If you go in for an interview and don’t like the people who work there, why would you want to work there? If there’s an attractive person and you have nothing in common, why does it matter if they like you? If you and your family member have totally different interests and beliefs, why worry about what they are doing?

When you notice that pressure to be liked, get curious. Why do you feel the need to be liked by this person? What will being liked by this person do for you or give you? What’s the worst that will happen if this person doesn’t like you?

When you start to let other people’s feelings be ok and instead focus on how you think and feel about yourself and the other person, you will notice a huge shift in how you view the world. You won’t worry about if people like you or not because you’ll be having too much fun getting to know them to see if it’s a good fit for both of you. If it’s not a good fit, that’s ok.

There are so many people and opportunities in this world and not all of them will be your cup of tea. It’s not a personal thing, it’s just that people are different. That’s what makes the world interesting. So go out and enjoy yourself. Stop focusing on if someone likes you and instead get curious about whether this is someone you would enjoy spending more time with and have a mutually beneficial relationship with.
